Mesothelioma. What is it and Should You be Concerned?

Mesothelioma. What is it and Should You be Concerned?

Asbestos is a mineral that was once widely known for its amazing resistance to heat and fire. Manufacturers and producers began using the mineral in everything from housing insulation to military equipment. Everywhere you looked, you were sure to find asbestos close by. Though, it slowly became more known that the inhalation and exposure to asbestos caused a rare cancer called mesothelioma, it wasn’t until years later, in the late 1970’s that regulations began to be made. Unfortunately, much harm had already been done and even today asbestos is still regularly found.

Many of the negligent companies were found and ordered to pay into an asbestos trust fund, that is still active and contains money for those who were wrongfully exposed to asbestos and are now paying the consequences.

Who’s at Risk?

Mesothelioma cancer has a long latency period of 20-50 years. This means even if you were exposed 20-50 years ago, you still have a risk of developing mesothelioma. This makes the majority of sufferers senior citizens. Also, the prognosis of this terrible disease is quite grim with the average lifespan only being 14 – 22 months after diagnosis.

Due to the nature of this disease, the more likely you were to have been exposed to asbestos, the higher your chances of developing this cancer. The most at risk parties are veterans and people who have worked in occupations that are often around asbestos. These occupations include firefighters, constructions workers, and shipyard workers among many others. Although, there are even cases of family members of these workers developing mesothelioma through secondary exposure from the workers bringing asbestos fibers home on their clothes.
